Unit 1: Univariate Data
In this unit students will explore and compare basic statistics. The objective for this unit is for students to become more comfortable reading and evaluating the statistics that are thrown at them on a daily basis.
Prerequisite Units: None
Materials Required: Calculator, Computer (CODAP)
Approximately 15-20 Days needed

1.1: Comparative Statistics
I like to begin the class with the 2% milk activity where students analyze why milk is called 2% milk. I project the image of the nutrition facts from a gallon of 2% milk and ask the question, "Why is the milk called 2% milk?" This is the first section of the 1.1 Lesson Guided Notes. After we discuss and students come to a consensus, I ask the students if they believe this is misleading. We finish the first class of the year by assigning the implicit bias test by Harvard University's Project Implicit. I think it's important for students to understand the implicit bias that lives within all of us before we begin our study of statistics.

Comparative Statistic Extra Practice
This is a great check for understanding activity where I can assess if students have a strong command of using the three comparative statistics. There are two exercises in this activity. The first is about the stead rise of podcasts and the second is about the number of abortions in the US since Row v. Wade. Both exercises facilitate great discussions. There is no key available since there are various methods students choose to answer each question.

CODAP Introduction Video
Codap is used extensively in Units 1 and 2. Take some time to teach your students how to use the program. You can use any data file you think your students will find interesting and I encourage you to show your students you are getting to know them by choosing something they want to engage with. Throughout your exploration activity ask your students, "What do you notice?" and "What do you wonder?" Pose questions to them that make them engage with the data. You don't have to have the answers - remember that our job is to get the students asking the questions and empowering them to believe that they have the intellect and resources to answer them.

To download CODAP file follow the directions below.
1.) Click DEATHS BY OVERDOSE CODAP FILE link 2.) In the upper left hand corner click the three lines and upside down triangle. 3.) Select "Create a Copy". A new browser should open in a new window titled the same as the original file with "Copy of ..." in the front. 4.) Click the same three lines and upside down triangle in the upper left corner and select "Save". This should allow you to save the copy you've made in your personal google drive. Once you save the file you can rename it whatever you want and all changes you make will save automatically as you make changes. |

This is a great activity to do in class with your students or have them do for outside of class for a homework assignment and then discuss in class. Directions are in the file.

Additional CODAP Data Sets
These data sets can be used for formative or summative assessments. Topics were researched based on student questions and what students wanted to explore.
Who wrote the Federalist Papers Activity
Initial CODAP file
Students research the number of "by"s in each paper and put their results into the table. Next, they create box plots to determine who wrote the disputed papers.

NYTimes Article - The Algorithm That Could Take Us Inside Shakespeare's Mind
This article discusses stylometry and your students may find it interesting. It discuss how WAN (word adjacency networks) have been used to attribute "Henry VI" to a collaboration with Christopher Marlowe as opposed to individual Shakespeare's work.

Research Exercise/Project (Post and Reply) - Fracing
In this project students are assigned a pro or against stance in regards to Fracing. In this post and reply exercise, students have to research their position and write a persuasive argument using documented statistics they found in their research. The goal is to get students to "spin the data" to make their argument. This project was edited by TJ Alcala in 2018 and his materials are attached below.

Change My Mind Project
If you're wanting to give you students more freedom, you can do a similar assignment to the one above and you ask your students research a topic they're passionate about. The goal is the same - to get students to "spin the data" to make their argument.
